You can join our group at any time, as a complete beginner too. The first group class is free and comes with no obligation: you try it, and then you decide. This page tells you what to expect.
Do I need to speak Hungarian?
No. The classes are taught in Hungarian, but the instructor speaks English, and he or one of the students translates the instructions for you. Krav Maga is learned mostly by watching and doing, and we regularly have students who do not speak Hungarian. If you would rather have everything explained in English, private training is taught fully in English.
Signing up
Please sign up for your first class in advance on the form below, so we know you are coming and can have a few words before class. Pick the day that suits you: the adult group trains on Monday and Wednesday from 20:00, and on Tuesday and Thursday from 19:30. The schedule shows the upcoming classes. The adult group is open from the age of 15.
Classes cannot be watched: not everyone likes being observed by strangers while practising. Join the class instead, it tells you far more than watching would. If there is a drill you do not want to do or cannot do, you can step out at any time, that is never a problem.
What to bring
- Comfortable sportswear: a T-shirt and shorts or trousers that do not restrict your movement.
- You do not need trainers, we practise barefoot or in socks on the mats. Flip-flops are handy for the way between the changing room and the gym.
- A towel and still water.
- You do not need to buy protective gear for the first class. If you come regularly later, the equipment article tells you what you will need.
- Take off jewellery and watches, and keep your nails short. If you have an injury or a physical problem, tell us before class so we can look out for it.
Where and when to arrive
Classes are held on the 1st floor of the Barázda Center (Barázda utca 42, 11th district, Budapest). Arrive 15 minutes before the class starts: the changing rooms are on the 4th floor of the building, with code lockers. Come down to the gym already changed. The location page shows the entrance, the changing rooms and parking with photos.
There are offices in the building, so please keep quiet in the corridors and the lift. If the previous class is still on, wait in the changing room.
What happens in class
Before class we introduce ourselves and ask whether you have done any sports before and whether there is anything we should look out for. The class is 90 minutes long and starts with a warm-up together. Then we practise punches, kicks and simple combinations on shields and focus mitts, and for most of the class we solve self-defense situations in pairs: releases from grabs, defenses against punches and kicks, a counterattack that fits the situation, and escape. We finish with a short cool-down and stretching.
As a beginner you work with the group, but the instructor gives you tasks that match your own level, and the more experienced students help you. Nobody expects you to do anything perfectly the first time. You do not need to be fit either: fitness builds up steadily in class.
After class
At the end of the class we go through the essentials: passes, prices, how payment works, what is worth buying. We also send these by e-mail so you can think it over. You can look at the passes in advance on the price list; signing up does not commit you to anything.
If you have any question before class, write to info@kravmaga11.hu or use the contact form, in English.
